- Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for a face-to-face meeting, saying he sees “no point” in it. Putin commented on the open letter at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and addressed Zelensky’s remarks about his age and election cycles. The rejection is the structural close on the most significant Ukrainian diplomatic move in months. Putin also slammed Western sanctions as “damaging to the global economy”. Apple separately removed the Kremlin-backed messaging app Max from its App Store.
- Hezbollah’s formal rejection of the Israel-Lebanon conditional ceasefire continued to dominate the regional picture Friday, with fresh Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon hitting Hezbollah positions. Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory as the precondition for any cessation. The Lebanon track is the structural binding pre-condition for the broader US-Iran framework deal; the Iran-Tehran framework remains in impasse with Trump’s tougher edits unanswered.
- The FTSE 100 closed at 10,405 on Friday, up 0.48% on the day, recovering most of the week’s losses as Brent crude eased to $95.80 a barrel. UK 10-year gilt yields fell back to the 5.00% line; sterling firmed to $1.3415. The VIX is down 3.4% as the war-risk premium eased modestly on Putin’s relatively measured SPIEF tone. The FTSE 100 closed the week roughly flat overall.
