Hezbollah Rejection of Truce Continues; Fresh Israeli Strikes Hit Southern Lebanon Positions
Hezbollah’s formal rejection of the Israel-Lebanon conditional ceasefire continued to dominate the regional picture Friday, with fresh Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon hitting Hezbollah positions. Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory as the precondition for any cessation. Israeli forces remain at the Beaufort Castle / Beaufort Ridge / Wadi al-Saluki line beyond the Litani River, the deepest Israeli position inside Lebanon in 26 years. The Israeli defence minister has said the ceasefire grants Israel the freedom to strike Beirut if conditions warrant.
Naim Qassem became Hezbollah Secretary General after Israel killed Hassan Nasrallah in the 2024 Dahieh strikes. His Thursday rejection of the Wednesday-signed truce is the first major operational test of his leadership against a US-brokered framework. The structural disconnect remains the US refusal to engage Hezbollah directly and the Lebanese government’s inability to deliver Hezbollah compliance unilaterally. French and Saudi envoys travelling to Beirut now have a sharper task: getting Qassem to convert the “reject and demand” posture into a “reject but allow indirect compliance” posture. President Donald Trump’s “progress made” framing despite the Qassem rejection is the operational walk-back.
