Iran Framework Deal in Impasse as Trump Tougher Terms Sit Unanswered by Tehran

The US-Iran framework deal remains in operational impasse Friday as Trump’s tougher edits on enriched-uranium disposal and Strait of Hormuz governance sit unanswered by Tehran. Iran’s chief negotiator earlier in the week said the United States is “not to be trusted”. The Hezbollah rejection of the Lebanon truce Thursday materially complicates Iran’s position on framework re-engagement. The earliest plausible signed-deal window has slipped to mid-next-week or later. Brent crude eased to $95.80 a barrel on the modest week-end de-escalation but the structural impasse remains.

The framework as originally drafted would extend the ceasefire by 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz with no tolls, lift the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, allow Iran to sell oil freely under sanctions waivers, and start new nuclear-programme talks. The two Trump edit areas — enriched-uranium disposal pathway and Hormuz governance — are the most structurally binding parts of the framework. Iran’s chief negotiator “not to be trusted” framing is consistent with the IRGC deputy’s Sunday “continue war” signal and the Tasnim “suspended indirect talks” announcement Monday. The next two binding signals to watch: any formal Iranian response to the Trump edits, and any Hezbollah indirect compliance signal that would allow Iran to climb back to the talks table.
