Evening Briefing: Thursday 4 June 2026
- Israel’s defence minister said Thursday that the conditional Lebanon ceasefire grants the military the freedom to strike Beirut if conditions warrant, contradicting the Wednesday-signed agreement’s “complete cessation” requirement. The Israel-Lebanon deal was made through US-brokered talks in Washington that did not include Hezbollah, a structural flaw at the heart of the ceasefire. Lebanon and Iran maintain Hezbollah’s buy-in is essential; the United States and Israel have not engaged Hezbollah directly. The ceasefire’s durability is now openly in question.
- President Donald Trump has formally sent his tougher edited terms back to Iran for the framework deal, according to officials briefed on the talks. The proposed changes are on the enriched-uranium disposal pathway and the Strait of Hormuz governance arrangement. Trump has called the talks “continuing at a rapid pace”; Iran has not yet provided a formal response. The Lebanon ceasefire’s structural fragility complicates Iran’s position on the framework re-engagement.
- The FTSE 100 closed at 10,355, down 0.53% on the day, as the Lebanon-truce optimism faded into the structural flaws of the deal and Brent crude pushed back above $97 a barrel. UK 10-year gilt yields ticked up to 5.04%; sterling weakened to $1.3395. The VIX rose 2.3% as the war-risk premium rebuilt. Defence stocks BAE Systems, Babcock and Melrose recovered most of Tuesday’s losses; oil majors BP and Shell led the FTSE gainers.
