Trump Formally Sends Tougher Terms to Iran for Peace Framework, Officials Say

President Donald Trump has formally sent tougher edited terms back to Iran for the peace framework deal, officials briefed on the talks told the New York Times. The proposed changes are on the enriched-uranium disposal pathway and the Strait of Hormuz governance arrangement. Trump has called the talks “continuing at a rapid pace”; Iran has not yet provided a formal response. The Lebanon ceasefire’s structural fragility — with Hezbollah not party and Israel reserving the right to strike Beirut — complicates Iran’s position on the framework re-engagement.

The two specific edit areas are the most structurally binding parts of the framework. The enriched-uranium question covers the disposal pathway for Iran’s estimated 440.9 kg of 60%-enriched uranium stockpile — Iran has insisted any disposal must be under IAEA supervision and reportedly resisted the Vance request for a 20-year suspension. The Strait of Hormuz governance edit is likely the mechanism for managing post-cessation naval traffic without a formal Iranian tolling arrangement; Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier in May the Iranian-proposed “tolling system” was “completely illegal”. If the Trump edits are accepted by the Iranian side, a signed deal remains plausible end of next week; if rejected, the framework re-engages a renegotiation cycle.
