Burnham Makerfield Thursday Evening: 14 Days to Polling; Lebanon Fragility Re-Engages Defence Pivot
Andy Burnham’s Makerfield by-election campaign closes Thursday with 14 days to polling day on 18 June. The Israeli defence-minister walk-back from the Lebanon ceasefire and the renewed risk of Beirut strikes partly re-engage Reform UK’s “defence first” line of attack. The five-candidate field is settled: Burnham (Labour) vs Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon, Conservative Michael Winstanley, Liberal Democrat Jake Austin and Green Chris Kennedy. A YouGov poll of Labour members shows Burnham beating Streeting 80% to 10%. Reform UK comfortably won every ward in the Makerfield constituency at the 7 May local elections.
The 18 June by-election is the operational test of whether Labour’s migration tightening and Burnham’s personal pull are enough to check Reform’s advance into traditional Labour territory and whether Burnham has the seat needed to formally challenge Starmer. The Lebanon ceasefire fragility partly re-engages Reform UK’s “defence first” line of attack; Burnham’s campaign is now expected to alternate between the “steady hand” positioning and explicit defence-spending commitments. Polling internal to the Burnham campaign reportedly puts him ahead by 12-15 points but with high don’t-know counts.
