Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. This policy also covers localStorage, a similar browser technology that allows websites to store data locally on your device. Unlike traditional cookies, localStorage data is not sent to the server with each request — it stays entirely on your device.

2. Technologies We Use

The Daily Brief uses localStorage (not traditional cookies) to store the following data on your device:

Key Type Purpose Duration
theme Essential Remembers your light/dark mode preference Persistent
notifySubscribed Essential Tracks whether you have enabled edition notifications Persistent
db_bookmarks Essential Stores your saved/bookmarked stories Persistent
db_markets Performance (consent) Caches market data to reduce API calls and improve load times. This is not strictly necessary for the Site to function and is stored with your consent via the cookie banner. Persistent
db_cookie_consent Essential Records that you have accepted this cookie policy Persistent
db_subscribe_email Functional Stores your email address if you express interest in premium subscriptions Persistent
breakingDismissed_* Essential Tracks which breaking news stories you have dismissed so they are not shown again Persistent

All items marked "Persistent" remain stored until you manually clear your browser data.

3. Third-Party Technologies

We load fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). When your browser requests these fonts, your IP address and browser headers are shared with Google's servers. Google states that it does not use this data to track users or create advertising profiles, and that font requests are not logged with your Google account. However, the connection itself transmits your IP address to Google. See Google Fonts Privacy FAQ for details.

We are evaluating self-hosting these fonts to eliminate this third-party data transfer entirely.

We do not use any tracking cookies or advertising cookies.

4. Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site. Cloudflare Web Analytics is a privacy-first service that:

No consent is required for Cloudflare Web Analytics under GDPR or the UK PECR, as it does not store data on your device or process personal data. See Cloudflare Web Analytics for details.

If we introduce any additional analytics or tracking technologies in the future, this policy will be updated before any such change takes effect.

5. Managing and Clearing Stored Data

You can view and delete localStorage data through your browser's developer tools, or clear all site data through your browser settings:

Note: clearing site data will reset your preferences (theme, bookmarks, notification status) and you will need to set them again.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this cookie policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised accordingly. We will notify you of material changes via a notice on the Site.
