Boelo Peaked at 85mph With Scotland’s Amber Warning Until Tonight
Storm Boelo peaked at 85mph overnight, recorded at Machrihanish in Argyll and at The Needles on the Isle of Wight. An amber wind warning covers most of Scotland and parts of northern England until nine tonight. Fourteen flood warnings are active in England, and five Scottish A-roads remain shut.
The warning that expires first is Northern Ireland’s, at ten this morning. The Scottish one runs from nine last night to nine tonight — which, because the clocks went back, is 25 hours rather than the 24 being widely reported. Capel Curig in Conwy recorded 84mph, the second-highest gust in the country, and it sits in a yellow area rather than an amber one. On power, the clearest figure is that supply had been restored to 131,225 properties by seven o’clock last night; a separate count of 10,860 still disconnected this morning covers one distributor’s network in England and is not a United Kingdom total, since Scottish and Northern Irish supply is handled by other companies and no Scottish figure has been published. More than a thousand homes are off near Springfield in Fermanagh and more than a thousand near Bushmills. Rainfall reached 69mm at Liscombe in Somerset. One train operator reports disruption on 21 of its 39 routes, almost all ferry sailings to the Scottish islands are cancelled, and the forecast is for winds to ease in the south this afternoon and the north overnight.
