A Vessel Is Struck in the Strait and Nobody Names a Culprit
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre issued a fresh warning reporting a ship hit by a suspected unknown projectile while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, starting a fire that has since been put out. The vessel is under way and the crew are safe, with no reported environmental damage. The strike happened on Monday evening; the report reached the centre late.
What is notable is the restraint. The warning names no attacker, no vessel and no weapon, saying only that the projectile was unknown, and no American military statement has followed. That matters because an open-source aggregator has claimed Iranian missile strikes and mine-laying in the strait on five separate days over the past fortnight, and on none of them has any approved outlet or any official body reported anything of the kind. This is the first genuine new warning since 23 September, and it is a great deal thinner than those claims. Iran, for its part, is not disputing the general picture: Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari insists the strait remains closed whatever Washington says about escorting tankers out.
