Powerful Earthquake Rattles Southern Mexico, No Deaths Reported

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Chiapas in southern Mexico, shaking buildings from Mexico City to El Salvador and briefly triggering a Pacific tsunami advisory that was later lifted. Authorities reported no deaths and only minor injuries and structural damage across Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. President Claudia Sheinbaum said preliminary reports showed no significant damage in the affected states.

The US Geological Survey put the epicentre about 48km south-west of Aquiles Serdán at a shallow depth of roughly 15km; Mexican civil-protection authorities cited a magnitude of 7.4. The quake was followed by a string of aftershocks, and the navy urged people to stay away from beaches for several hours. Mexico City’s earthquake early-warning siren did not sound, the government said, because the energy radiated in the first seconds fell below its activation threshold. The region is highly seismic; a 2017 quake killed hundreds in the capital. Watch for damage assessments in rural Chiapas, where buildings are weaker.
