Culture secretary Lisa Nandy said: “It is our duty to ensure that the immense courage of those who have served is never forgotten.” Defence secretary Wes Streeting added: “We have a moral duty to stand by our veterans and military families who sacrifice so much.” The service is broadcast live on the BBC, ITV and Sky News, with about 10,000 members of the public expected on Whitehall. It is the first Remembrance Sunday of the Burnham premiership and comes with British forces committed in the Gulf for a ninth month.
