IRGC lifts self-imposed 2,000km limit on ballistic missile range

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said on Saturday that the range restriction it had long cited to reassure Europe no longer applies. “This limitation has been lifted for us,” its spokesman Hossein Mohebbi told reporters in Tehran, adding that Iran would “demonstrate these capabilities in practice” rather than make statements. The announcement followed Mojtaba Khamenei’s order for an unrestrained response to any future US or Israeli threat.

The 2,000km envelope already covered the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, most of Egypt and parts of Greece and the Balkans; Iran is reported to have attempted a strike on Diego Garcia, some 4,000km away, in March. Mr Mohebbi said the IRGC would soon unveil another underground “missile city” and that preparations would be made if Iran chose to alter its nuclear doctrine. Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said he had spoken to 12 counterparts in 48 hours, including Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, restating Tehran’s seven conditions for reopening Hormuz. The IAEA puts Iran’s stock of 60%-enriched uranium at 440.9kg.
