Binance Hit by $6.3bn Hack Blamed on North Korea
Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, says $6.3bn of digital assets were affected in what may be the biggest hack in history. About half has been frozen, and the exchange says it will “cover all losses”. Chainalysis and TRM Labs have attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit.
Early checks suggest that an engineer’s laptop was compromised, which allowed unauthorised withdrawals. The theft dwarfs the $1.5bn Bybit hack of 2025, which was also linked to Pyongyang. TRM Labs’ Ari Redbord called it a “watershed moment” and warned that recovery efforts are far from over while the attacker still holds such a large sum. Chainalysis says it has “high confidence” in the North Korean link. Western agencies have long said such thefts fund the regime’s nuclear and missile programmes. Pyongyang has always denied involvement.
