Number 10 North Advertises 50 Jobs in Manchester Hiring Drive

Andy Burnham’s Manchester office has advertised 50 jobs, including a ‘rewiring the state deputy director’ paid up to £117,000. BBC analysis puts the total basic salaries at up to £2.8m. No10 North already has 120 staff, nearly half the 280 who work in Downing Street. It will move to a permanent office on First Street in spring 2027.

Government sources say the roles will be paid for from existing budgets, with no redundancies elsewhere in the civil service. The government says No10 North is “driving the most significant transfer of power out of Westminster in a generation”. The Conservatives disagree. “Manchesterism is just more bureaucracy at taxpayers’ expense,” said Alex Burghart, the party’s deputy leader. It also emerged that English mayors will be free to use their share of income tax, which starts in April 2028, to give grants directly to residents. Lord Houchen plans to do this in Tees Valley.
