Evening Briefing: Saturday 24 October 2026
- If you are in Scotland, northern England or Northern Ireland: amber wind warnings take effect at nine tonight and run through tomorrow. Widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph are forecast, 80mph on exposed coasts. All 30 west coast ferry services are cancelled for the weekend and several Scottish rail lines close from nine.
- If you are travelling tomorrow: one operator advises against travel north of Preston and another against the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line. A third storm may follow late Monday into Tuesday on a similar track, though forecasters say it is too early to know whether it will be named.
- If you bank or hold bank shares: the industry is lobbying hard against a Budget levy, and unions estimate that raising the surcharge from 3% to 8% would yield £2.25bn a year. Four days out, nothing has been published officially and every figure in circulation is a briefing.
