Houthi Missile Strike on Yemeni Camp Kills More Than 50
More than 50 security personnel were killed and 200 injured when the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at a training camp near Ataq in Shabwa province, local authorities say — far above earlier tolls. Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, condemned a “criminal attack” and promised a “firm response”.
The Houthis said they had targeted “Saudi enemy concentrations”. Yemen’s civil war has flared since September, when the Houthis seized ground overlooking the Bab al-Mandab Strait; a government offensive launched at the start of October, backed by Saudi-led air power, has since retaken part of the Red Sea coast. Fighting continues there, around besieged Taiz and in Marib and al-Jawf, and the Houthis have answered Saudi air strikes with missiles and drones aimed at Saudi airports and energy sites. The Shabwa strike is among the deadliest of the escalation, and raises the risk to Red Sea shipping alongside Hormuz.
