Turkish Police Raid an Opposition Broadcaster Mid-Transmission

Police entered the Istanbul headquarters of Halk TV on Wednesday morning, halting live broadcasts. The channel says staff cannot get into the building and that a new manager has been appointed to run it. Turkish media report seventeen arrest warrants linked to its owner.

The station is widely seen as close to the main opposition Republican People’s Party and is routinely critical of President Erdogan. Installing a manager is the part that distinguishes this from a search: a raid interrupts a broadcaster, an appointment replaces it. The warrant figure comes from Turkish media rather than from any confirmed official source, and is reported here as such. It follows a pattern that has tightened through the year. In May a Turkish court removed the opposition party’s leadership from running it, a ruling the party said cemented the president’s grip, and Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem Imamoglu — the president’s most serious rival — has now been in prison for more than a year on corruption accusations he denies. Turkey is a NATO member and a candidate for European Union membership, which is what makes the treatment of its press a matter beyond its borders rather than an internal affair. Watch whether the channel returns to air under its existing editorial team or under the new appointment.
