Third Carrier Sails for Iran as a Supertanker Burns in Hormuz

The United States is sending a third aircraft carrier towards Iran, an American official said; by the end of November three carriers and two amphibious landing groups will be positioned around the country, layered on roughly fifty thousand personnel already in the region. Overnight a supertanker carrying some 2.5 million barrels was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire. The crew were reported safe.

The official’s framing was explicit: the concentration of force is meant to hand the president a wider menu of options should he decide to act, and there is said to be no plan to withdraw assets even if a deal is reached. That is the posture of a government preparing to choose rather than one deterring. It sits alongside what Mr Trump has said this week — that resuming the bombing after November’s midterms is “possible” and that “we’re stocking up at levels we’ve never done before”. Abbas Araghchi told American television Iran was “fully prepared” to resume the war, then wrote that “we did not come to New York to sell a war. We came to forge peace.” The analyst Abas Aslani described the deadlock precisely: the question is no longer whether to negotiate but “who is going to abandon the primary leverage first”. Crude flows through the strait have largely returned to pre-war levels even as individual ships keep being hit. Watch whether anyone claims the tanker.
