Police Correct Fairford Arrest Detail as Tehran Calls In Ambassador

Counter-terror police have revised their account of Thursday’s arrest over the RAF Fairford incident. The man held in Westminster on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts is 25, not 27, and police have withdrawn their earlier statement that a second man was questioned under caution. No charge has followed. Separately, the British ambassador to Iran met its foreign ministry on Thursday at Tehran’s request.

Three things in the overnight revision matter. The retraction narrows the arrest to a single individual, and a force publicly withdrawing a detail within hours suggests an investigation moving fast rather than cleanly. The absence of a charge matters more: this man was held on the same ground as the original five, who were bailed on Monday in what police called an “investigative decision” that was “grounded in experience and strategy”. Bail rather than charge, twice over, points to an evidential picture still being assembled around who directed the operation rather than who was present. And the diplomacy has reversed direction — it was Tehran that asked to see Britain’s ambassador, not London that summoned Iran’s, which is Iran pushing back against the Prime Minister’s “strong indications” in the only register open to it. Counter Terrorism Policing’s Vicki Evans maintains the force is examining “all possible angles — including foreign state involvement”. Five men remain on bail, all British nationals from London. Watch whether anyone is charged before the Commons returns.
