Eight Killed in Ukraine, Three at a Children's Centre in Sumy
Russian strikes killed eight people across five regions on Sunday, the day after Moscow told the General Assembly it would pursue its war aims regardless. The interior minister, Ivan Vyhivskyi, said a children’s centre in Sumy was hit, killing three including a 16-year-old girl. Three more died in night-time strikes on Zaporizhzhia, one man was killed by a drone in Kyiv and a “massive strike” on Odesa killed another.
The target list is the point. Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes hit two kindergartens and two schools alongside housing and other civilian infrastructure, which is a pattern rather than a set of misses. In Odesa the regional head Oleg Kiper counted damage to housing, a shop, a hotel, a medical building and a warehouse storing grain; in Kyiv the mayor Vitalii Klitschko said a woman and two 16-year-olds were wounded and taken to hospital. All of this landed a day after Sergei Lavrov told the United Nations that Russia intended to continue its campaign whatever the circumstances. The diplomacy has not caught up: Washington has proposed technical three-way talks with the United Arab Emirates floated as a venue, and Ukraine is still waiting for a date to be proposed. Watch whether one is fixed before the heating season bites.
