'I Can Knock That Dead': Burnham Rules Out an Early Election
Two days before his first conference as Prime Minister, Mr Burnham closed down the speculation in a round of regional interviews. Asked whether the next election would be in 2029, he said: “Well, yes, that’s when the next election will be. All of this speculation on an early election, I can knock that dead.” He had begun the day softer — “not particularly” tempted — before hardening through the afternoon. He also trailed more public control of the water industry as a conference announcement.
The temptation was real and the arithmetic explains why he resisted it. This week’s projection put Labour comfortably first on seats while its vote share sits in the low twenties, which means the lead rests on a right split three ways rather than on enthusiasm for the government — and an early poll would risk trading a working majority for a coalition. His own framing was that an election would throw the country “into a backward-looking process where we’re arguing again amongst ourselves”. The clock runs to August 2029.
