Maternity Hospital Hit in Kyiv; Russian Drones Cross Into Moldova and Romania
Russia fired 282 drones along with ballistic and hypersonic missiles overnight, killing two and injuring eight in Kyiv, where a maternity hospital’s facade, windows and doors were damaged and one of the dead was found in its car park. No patients or staff were hurt. Six more people were killed at a farm storage facility in the Kharkiv region. Moldova’s president Maia Sandu said four Russian drones entered its airspace, at least one exploding; Romania reported one crashing on its territory.
The spillover is the part that should worry Europe. Drones crossing into Moldova and Romania on the same night, with Poland scrambling aircraft twice during the day, turns a bombardment of Ukraine into a recurring test of NATO’s eastern edge — and it comes while Washington is brokering a limited truce covering exactly the infrastructure being hit. Mr Zelensky listed the night’s targets himself: “residential buildings, a maternity hospital, energy infrastructure, and logistics”, and asked for the one thing that would change the arithmetic before winter — “We need ballistic interceptors to protect lives.” Moscow’s account was that it struck defence, logistics and telecommunications facilities.
