781 Cross the Channel in a Single Day, the Highest This Year
Ten boats carried 781 people on Wednesday, beating July’s 752 and setting the highest single-day total of 2026. That takes the year to 18,565 and the number since the Prime Minister took office to 6,096, with the annual total still down about 42% on last year. The record comes days after two boats landed undetected in Kent and the Home Secretary ordered an urgent review. Nigel Farage said Reform would deploy the Royal Navy.
The number is real and the framing is contested. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said Labour “has let an entire army-sized population cross the Channel illegally… That is completely bonkers.” The government’s reply was that its progress this year is “indisputable” but that it must “push further and harder in order to eradicate this vile trade”. Two pieces of context cut against the politics of the day: this was only the thirty-first highest 24-hour total since 2018, and the 2022 record stood above 1,300; and on a like-for-like count of days in office, 83,279 people have crossed under this government against 83,500 under the Conservatives' final equivalent period — 221 more under the previous government.
