Two Boats Land Undetected in Kent; Home Secretary Orders Urgent Review
Shabana Mahmood has told Border Security Command to investigate how two small boats reached Kent beaches without being intercepted — twenty-one people detained at Samphire Hoe on Tuesday, five near Folkestone on Monday. Such landings are extraordinarily rare: before Monday, none had been recorded since September 2025. “Our improved monitoring has led to uncontrolled crossings becoming incredibly rare, but even one is one too many,” she said, blaming smugglers launching from much further west in France.
The tactical shift is the story. Launching from Normandy rather than Calais produces crossings of thirty hours or more — the boat that reached Dover overnight had been at sea that long — and boats arriving far from the expected corridor are harder to track and to meet.
