Parents Could Lose Benefits or Face Prison Over Children's Crimes, Minister Says
The youth-justice minister opened a new front in the government’s order agenda: the system “should hold parents to account in a proportionate way for ensuring that they play their role in keeping communities safe” — with benefit sanctions and, in extremis, prosecution among the levers under consideration as part of wider youth-justice reforms. The signal, floated through a newspaper interview, was left deliberately unbounded.
Parental-responsibility law is one of politics’ recurring temptations — intuitive, popular, and largely unenforced wherever tried, because the households in question are usually the ones already failing under every existing sanction, and removing benefits from a struggling family reliably manufactures more of the disorder it punishes. The politics, though, are self-executing: the announcement is the policy, staking Labour’s claim to the order-and-discipline ground Reform farms, and forcing opponents to defend the parents of knife-carrying teenagers. The “proportionate” qualifier is where any eventual bill will live or die.
