Polanski Will Fight Starmer's Old Seat in Defining Left Test
Green leader Zack Polanski confirmed he will seek his party’s nomination for Holborn & St Pancras, saying he wants to “stand up for people struggling to pay their bills”: “I know it well and I love it.” Leftwing independent Andrew Feinstein will not stand, and his local alliance is expected to back the Greens, who plan to flood the seat with campaigners this weekend — replaying the Gorton model that overturned a 13,000 Labour majority in February. “Genuinely consequential,” said More in Common’s Luke Tryl.
By-elections rarely deserve the adjective “defining”, but this one is a controlled experiment: Mr Burnham’s entire leadership theory is that Labour’s left flank comes home under a leader who blames Brexit, promises public ownership and talks like Manchester — and here is that theory on the ballot, in the departed centrist’s own seat, against the Green leader at the peak of his insurgency, with the left’s independent infrastructure standing aside to give him a clean shot. Mr Tryl’s framing is exactly right: a Labour hold banks the Burnham bounce as real; a Green win in the shadow of King’s Cross says the bounce is a poll artefact that dissolves on contact with an actual election.
