'Absolute Cover-Up': Ex-Minister Says MoD Hid Nuclear Test Records
Former veterans minister Tobias Ellwood told Newsnight the Ministry of Defence deliberately withheld medical records — blood and urine tests — from Cold War nuclear test veterans, and that assurances he gave Parliament from MoD briefings were “a complete lie”. What lifts this beyond the familiar veterans-grievance genre is the accuser: a former minister for veterans saying the department briefed him into misleading Parliament is an institutional confession, not a campaign claim, and “waiting for them to die” is the precise allegation survivors’ groups have made for decades while being dismissed as embittered. The records at issue — contemporaneous blood counts from men stationed under mushroom clouds at Maralinga and Christmas Island — are exactly what compensation claims have always foundered without. If they exist and were withheld, liability follows; if they never existed, the monitoring itself was negligent. Either answer is expensive, which has always been the suspected motive.
