NHS to Offer Free Cholesterol Tests at High-Street Pharmacies
NHS England will offer free finger-prick cholesterol tests at around 100 pharmacies from this autumn — a seven-minute walk-in check described as the first scheme of its kind in the world, open to anyone aged 40 to 84 who has not had a blood test in the past year. In the north London pilot, nearly one in five of those tested was found at high risk of a heart attack or stroke within a decade. The scheme supports the plan to cut heart-disease deaths by a quarter.
The pilot’s numbers make the public-health case with unusual clarity: 2,500 people walked in off a high street, and nearly 500 discovered a risk they did not know they carried — at least 88 of them now on statins that cost pennies and prevent the events that fill cardiac wards. Cholesterol is the archetypal silent killer, and the barrier has never been the science but the friction: booking a GP appointment for a problem you have no symptoms of.
