“Financial violence” is a phrase that will outlive this news cycle — a US Treasury secretary naming the doctrine plainly, that the dollar system itself is a weapon to be swung weekly — and its test is the same as ever: China. Sanctioning Chinese banks for Iranian trade would be the financial equivalent of the Larak strike, effective precisely in proportion to how dangerous it is, and Mr Bessent must make that threat credible in Asheville while his president needs Beijing at the table next month. The split-screen writes itself: G20 ministers summoned to an American mountain resort while the counter-bloc’s leaders gather in Bishkek with Iran’s president among them, hours after his forces struck American bases. Watch which bank falls this week — and whether any Chinese name is on it.
