Norway's King Harald Dies at 89 After 35 Years on Throne
King Harald V of Norway died peacefully at 06:35 this morning at Oslo’s national hospital, the palace announced, after ten days of treatment for complications of a blood condition. Europe’s oldest monarch, and Norway’s first native-born king since the fourteenth century, he is succeeded by his son, now King Haakon. Crowds had kept vigil at the palace through the final days; his family were at his bedside.
They called him the People’s King, the title his father carried before him, and he earned it the Norwegian way — by being unremarkable on purpose: the monarch who took the tram, married a commoner against the establishment’s wishes and waited nine years for permission, and told his country after the Utøya massacre not to “let fear take over”. His 1990s speech celebrating Norwegians “from Afghanistan and from Toten” alike became the modern monarchy’s founding text.
