Ukraine Strikes Deep Inside Russia as Zelenskyy Sends Peace Proposals
A Ukrainian drone strike some 750 miles inside Russia, in Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, killed at least 13 people including a child and reportedly hit a refinery, part of Kyiv’s campaign against Russian oil infrastructure. President Zelenskyy said Ukraine had sent fresh proposals to the United States aimed at ending the war. Moscow has yet to respond in detail.
The strike is among the deepest Ukraine has reached into Russian territory, underscoring a strategy of taking the war to the refineries and depots that fund and fuel Moscow’s war machine. Such attacks carry risks of civilian casualties far from the front and of Russian reprisals, but Kyiv argues they are legitimate military targets. Mr Zelenskyy’s move to put proposals to Washington signals an effort to keep the United States engaged in a settlement, even as fighting grinds on and winter approaches. Whether the overture gains traction will depend on how Mr Trump weighs it against his dealings with Moscow. Watch for Russia’s response and any American reaction to Kyiv’s plan.
