Burnham to Bring Forward Ban on "Subscription Traps"
Andy Burnham has said he will bring forward a ban on “subscription traps” — deals that are deliberately hard to cancel — and crack down on misleading discounts and fake sales, as he opened a national cost-of-living tour. The measures are billed as “everyday fixes” for household budgets. It is the Prime Minister’s first big domestic push since returning from holiday.
Subscription traps — the free trials that roll into paid deals and the memberships that take endless effort to cancel — are a common consumer gripe, and cracking down on them is popular and relatively cheap. Whether such “everyday fixes” make a meaningful dent in household costs, against the bigger pressures of high prices and stagnant wages, is another matter. Mr Burnham is keen to show he is focused on the cost of living as he faces rows over migration, prisons and net zero. Delivering visible savings will be the test. Watch what concrete measures follow the tour.
