US Claims Israel-Lebanon Progress Despite Border Flare-Up
American mediators said they had made progress towards a mechanism to verify the disarmament of Hezbollah, even after a deadly flare-up along the Israel-Lebanon border this week. Lebanon separately pointed to “positive progress” on demarcating the frontier and on prisoners. The optimism followed the collapse of earlier talks in Rome and Israeli strikes into southern Lebanon.
The claimed progress offered a rare hopeful note on a border that has repeatedly erupted, and reflects Washington’s push to stabilise Lebanon and rein in Hezbollah. Yet the gap remains wide: the group has denounced the process as a “humiliation”, and this week’s killing of two Israeli reservists by a roadside bomb, and Israel’s retaliation, showed how easily the diplomacy can be derailed. Beirut’s government is under pressure to assert control over its south without reigniting internal conflict. Talks are expected to resume next month. Watch whether the verification mechanism takes shape or the violence flares again.
