Government Plans Walk-In Mental Health Centres

The government has announced plans for more than 150 walk-in mental-health centres in high-street locations, offering early support to people in crisis without an appointment. Backed by an investment of around £343m and opening from the autumn, the centres are intended to ease pressure on overstretched A&E departments and hospitals. Ministers cast the scheme as a shift towards earlier intervention.

Mental-health services have struggled to keep pace with soaring demand, leaving many patients to reach crisis point before they are seen, often ending up in emergency departments ill-suited to their needs. Placing drop-in centres in familiar community settings such as high streets is meant to catch problems earlier and more cheaply. Campaigners welcomed the ambition but cautioned that the plan will only work if the centres are properly staffed, amid chronic shortages of mental-health professionals. Delivery, as ever, is the test. Watch whether the centres open on time and are adequately resourced.
