Houthi Attack Kills Dozens in Yemen
Houthi fighters launched an assault on Yemeni government forces that killed at least thirty people, in some of the deadliest internal fighting in the country in years. The Houthis themselves claimed a higher toll of forty-five dead. The attack marked a sharp escalation in a conflict that has drawn in powers across the region.
Yemen’s war, which has raged for a decade and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, has flared anew as the Houthis flex their strength during the wider confrontation with the United States and Israel. The Iran-aligned group controls much of the country and has attacked shipping in the Red Sea, adding to the pressure on global energy routes already strained by the Hormuz standoff. The reported death tolls came from the combatants and could not be independently verified. Fresh fighting threatens to unravel the fragile calm that had held in parts of Yemen. Watch whether the violence spreads.
