Fuego Volcano Spews Lava as Villages Flee
Guatemala’s Fuego volcano sent rivers of lava down its flanks as its eruption intensified, forcing the evacuation of villages in its path. Authorities kept a nationwide alert in place, warning that the volcano had entered a more explosive phase. No casualties had been reported.
Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, looms about twenty miles from Guatemala City and has a deadly record: an eruption in 2018 killed more than two hundred people, many caught by fast-moving flows of superheated gas and ash. Mindful of that disaster, authorities acted quickly to clear communities this time.
