Guatemala's Fuego Volcano Turns More Explosive
Guatemala’s Fuego volcano has entered a “more explosive phase”, hurling lava and ash nearly four miles into the sky and forcing the evacuation of villages nearby. The disaster agency issued a nationwide orange alert, its second-highest level, as the eruption intensified. No casualties had been reported.
Fuego, one of Central America’s most active volcanoes, sits about twenty miles from Guatemala City and has a fearsome history: an eruption in 2018 killed more than two hundred people, many overwhelmed by fast-moving flows of superheated gas and debris. Authorities moved quickly this time to clear communities in the volcano’s path, mindful of that disaster.
