Six Climbers Still Missing on Pakistan's Broad Peak

Six climbers remained missing on Pakistan’s Broad Peak on Saturday, two days after an avalanche swept a ten-strong expedition, with four bodies already recovered. Among those still unaccounted for is the celebrated Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known for his record-breaking climbs. Rescue teams pressed on in punishing conditions high on the mountain.

Hopes of finding survivors had all but gone as the search stretched into a second day at altitudes above 8,000 metres, where cold, thin air and the ever-present risk of further avalanches make rescue perilous. Mr Purja, the subject of a Netflix film, is among the best-known figures in high-altitude mountaineering. The Pakistan Alpine Club said helicopters and ground teams were being used where the weather allowed. The Karakoram’s giant peaks claim lives most summers, a toll that climbs as more climbers attempt them. Watch for news of the missing six.
