Four Bodies Found in Search for Broad Peak Climbers

Rescuers searching for ten climbers who went missing in an avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak have recovered four bodies, officials said, as hopes for the remaining six faded. The renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, known for his record-breaking ascents, is among those still unaccounted for. The search was continuing in treacherous conditions.

The recovery of the bodies, high on one of the world’s tallest mountains, confirmed the fears that had grown since the group was swept away a day earlier. Mr Purja, the subject of a Netflix film about his climbs, has one of the largest followings in mountaineering. Rescue at such altitudes, above 8,000 metres in the Karakoram, is agonisingly slow and dangerous, and weather often halts it altogether. The Pakistan Alpine Club said teams were pressing on to reach the others. Watch for news of the six climbers still missing.
