US-Iran Truce Collapses as Iran Fires Missiles at US Forces
The four-day pause in the war between the United States and Iran collapsed overnight, after Iran fired a salvo of ballistic missiles at American forces in the Middle East in what US Central Command called a “surprise attack”. The missiles were intercepted with no casualties, the US said, and Jordan reported shooting down five more over its territory. In response, American and Saudi jets struck Iran-backed militias across eastern Iraq.
The strikes on Iraq, framed by Washington and Riyadh as retaliation for a wave of drone attacks in recent days, killed at least ten fighters from the Iran-aligned Popular Mobilisation Forces, according to the group. Central Command warned that Iran and “its terrorist proxies must cease these attacks to avoid further US military response”, while the Revolutionary Guard vowed that “the resistance will continue” as long as Iran was threatened. The sudden escalation shatters the diplomacy of recent days and revives fears of a wider Gulf war.
