Zelensky Meets Trump as the Senate Weighs Russia Sanctions
President Zelensky is due to meet President Trump at the White House, as the US Senate prepares to vote on sanctions that would impose steep tariffs on the biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas. The talks come after a night of Russian strikes in eastern Ukraine that killed at least seven people. Mr Trump is reported to want Iran added to the sanctions measure, a move Kyiv supports.
The proposed sanctions — threatening 100 per cent tariffs on major purchasers of Russian energy, chiefly China and India — would mark a sharp escalation of economic pressure on Moscow, and their passage would be a significant win for Kyiv. Washington and Kyiv have deepened cooperation of late, including joint production of Patriot interceptors and talks on manufacturing drones. Russia, meanwhile, pressed its heaviest assaults around Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. The double bill of Mr Trump hosting both Mr Netanyahu and Mr Zelensky makes for a consequential day of diplomacy. Watch the Senate vote and what the leaders agree.
