Israeli Strike Kills a Senior Hamas Officer in Gaza

An Israeli air strike on a vehicle in Gaza killed two Hamas security officials on Sunday, among them Brigadier General Abdel-Nasser al-Maqadma, described as the head of Hamas’s police in the north of the territory. The Israeli military said several of those killed had taken part in the 7 October 2023 attacks. It was the latest strike to test a fragile ceasefire.

Al Jazeera described the attack as a “double-tap” strike. The killing of a senior figure in Hamas’s security apparatus signals Israel’s continued targeting of the group’s command even under the US-brokered truce that has held, loosely, since last October. More than a thousand Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire took effect, according to Gaza’s health ministry, amid near-daily Israeli operations. The strike came as settler violence surged in the occupied West Bank, where two mosques were torched overnight. Watch whether Hamas responds and whether the ceasefire frays further.
