Ukrainian Civilian Toll Hits a Wartime Record as Crimea Link Is Cut
Russia’s intensifying long-range strikes drove Ukrainian civilian casualties to their highest monthly level since April 2022, United Nations monitors reported — 293 killed and nearly 2,000 injured in June. War analysts said Ukraine’s drone campaign has now partly severed the main road link between mainland Russia and occupied Crimea, forcing Moscow to divert scarce air defences.
The UN monitoring mission attributed almost half of June’s casualties to missile and long-range drone strikes on population centres, which have killed nearly 1,400 civilians since January. The Institute for the Study of War assessed that Ukraine’s interdiction of the Rostov–Crimea highway has partially deprived Russia of a key ground supply line, prompting rare public pushback from Kremlin officials against claims the route is secure.
