Mediators Table a Ten-Day Truce as Iran Signals Openness to Talks
Mediators have handed Tehran a proposal for a ten-day ceasefire to revive last month’s collapsed interim deal, a senior Iranian official said, though Washington has played down the prospect of the President accepting it. The US Secretary of State said America remained open to a diplomatic solution if Iran halted its attacks. Iran asked Pakistan to resume its mediating role even as the strikes continued.
The proposed pause is intended to buy time to resurrect the 14-point memorandum signed last month, which promised a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a roadmap to a nuclear settlement. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi struck a harder note, insisting the right time to negotiate was “precisely when you have achieved a reliable field and strategic achievement on the military front”. Pakistan and Qatar have brokered previous rounds. The gap between Tehran’s demand for control of Hormuz and Washington’s insistence on free navigation remains the central obstacle.
