Farage Demands a Snap Election as Badenoch Attacks “Airy Fairy” Plans
Opposition leaders have rounded on Mr Burnham’s unelected arrival in Downing Street. Reform’s Nigel Farage demanded an immediate general election, saying the Prime Minister has “no mandate” beyond his Makerfield by-election. The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, branded his agenda “airy fairy” and, in a letter, urged him to rule out tax rises while refusing to hand him a “blank cheque”. Mr Burnham faces his first Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.
Mr Burnham is the seventh Prime Minister since 2016 and took power without a public vote, handing his rivals a potent legitimacy line. Mr Farage, fighting a Clacton by-election, is betting Reform can force an early contest; Mrs Badenoch has stopped short of demanding one, wary of the Conservatives’ polling position. “Outside of 25,000 voters in Makerfield he has literally no mandate for this at all,” Mr Farage said. The mandate question will dominate his first Commons appearance on Wednesday, where he must convert platform rhetoric into scrutinised detail. Watch whether Labour’s large majority insulates him or backbench loyalists complicate his position.
