Russian Strike on Grain Ship Near Odesa Kills Ten
At least ten people were killed when a Russian strike hit a cargo vessel near the Ukrainian port of Odesa. The Guinea-Bissau-flagged ship, carrying corn and crewed by Indian and Syrian nationals, was struck as Russia said it had targeted fuel reservoirs at the port; eight crew were rescued. The attack pushed July’s death toll in the Odesa region to twenty-eight.
The strike underscores Russia’s intensifying campaign against Ukraine’s Black Sea grain-export corridor, a lifeline for both the economy and global food supplies. President Zelenskyy said Ukraine was “responding, justly, to every Russian strike against our cities and communities”. Kyiv also reported striking seven Russian vessels in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, bringing July’s naval tally to 183. The targeting of neutral-flagged merchant shipping raises fresh questions over the security of the export route. Watch for diplomatic protests from India and other crew-supplying states.
