Heatwave Peaks as Wildfires Rage and Fire Risk Turns “Extreme”

The summer’s third heatwave reached its peak this weekend, and with it came fire: crews from Derbyshire and Greater Manchester fought a significant blaze across Tintwistle Moor, closing the A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions, as fire services warned the wildfire risk had escalated to “extreme” across England and Wales. Temperatures reached the mid-30s, amber heat-health alerts run across most of England until 9pm on Sunday, and the health agency continues to warn of a rise in deaths among the vulnerable.

The moorland fires are the sharp end of a fortnight of accumulated heat and drought: tinder-dry uplands ignite from a spark, a discarded barbecue or a lightning strike, and burn across hundreds of metres before crews can contain them, closing roads and threatening homes. The London Fire Brigade has warned that the risk moves from “elevated” to “extreme” through to Monday and urged people to abandon disposable barbecues entirely. The heat’s other toll is quieter and often deadlier: open water that looks inviting but triggers cold-water shock, prompting repeated police and fire warnings after drownings at reservoirs and lakes; and a health service under sustained strain. This year has now logged the most days above 34C on record. Watch for any escalation to a red alert, the spread of the wildfires, and the admissions and excess-death data once the heat finally breaks.
