Burnham Camp Split Over Cost of Living Before Handover

Andy Burnham’s team is divided over how to respond to the cost-of-living crisis as he approaches power, with the incoming prime minister promising radical change while pledging to stick to the fiscal rules he may ultimately need to bend. The divisions are the predictable arithmetic of his position: the promises that made him the movement’s candidate — help with bills, public ownership, regional investment — now collide with the fiscal rules he has promised markets he will keep, a £4.7bn defence gap, and a Treasury his own side accuses of orthodoxy. The recycled devolution article is a small error with a pointed moral: a leadership built on place-based authenticity cannot mass-produce localism. Two weeks from the door of No 10, the internal argument over the winter package is the one that matters. Watch which faction’s language survives into his first programme.
