Burnham Rules Out Early Election and Backs Triple Lock
Andy Burnham ruled out calling an early general election if he becomes Prime Minister this month, telling a Reddit question session: “I’m going to work to the 2024 manifesto.” He committed to keeping the pension triple lock — “the commitment in the manifesto stands” — said he would seek returns agreements for failed asylum seekers “including with Taliban-run Afghanistan”, and backed closer ties with the EU. The session is the fullest policy platform Burnham has offered since declaring, and the format was the message: direct to the public, no lobby filter, answering Badenoch inside the thread — “don’t forget it’s only two weeks since I faced questions from 74,000 members of the public of Makerfield”. Ruling out an early election removes an uncertainty markets had priced; keeping the triple lock closes off a saving his fiscal critics wanted; the Afghanistan returns line will be the contested one.
