Evening Briefing: Wednesday 3 June 2026
- Israel killed at least seven more people across Lebanon on Wednesday, including a paramedic, in what Lebanese authorities are calling an unceasing truce violation. Israeli drone strikes killed at least six in southern Lebanon and a separate strike hit a car on a busy highway in Khaldeh near Beirut. The Israel-Hezbollah cessation Trump announced on Tuesday is now under direct pressure; the military campaign in Lebanon threatens to derail the US-Iran peace talks. Lebanon-Israel talks have nonetheless advanced as French and Saudi envoys prepare to visit Beirut.
- The FTSE 100 closed lower on Wednesday at 10,410, down 0.29% on the day, as oil prices climbed and Middle East peace hopes faded with the renewed Israeli strikes on Lebanon. Brent crude rose 2% to $96.20 a barrel. UK 10-year gilt yields ticked back up to 5.02%. Sterling weakened to $1.3410; gold firmed to $4,480. The VIX rose 2.8% as the war-risk premium rebuilt.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian long-range drones struck the oil terminal in St Petersburg overnight, on the opening day of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026 hosted in the city by President Vladimir Putin. The strike is calibrated for maximum diplomatic embarrassment of the Kremlin during its showcase event and indicates Ukrainian intelligence-led targeting of high-prestige Russian gatherings.
